associated with low weight gain, higher rectal temperature and increased incidence of lung lesions, but correlations among these variables were low (ranging from-.59 to .03). Some pigs replicated the virus at high rates and showed all the clinical symptoms of PRRS. They grew slowly, had high body temperature , and had lung lesions indicating interstitial pneumonia. Other pigs with similar levels of viremia showed few symptoms of PRRS. They gained weight at normal rates, had normal or only slightly elevated body temperature, and had few lung lesions. Similarly, there were pigs in this sample with relatively low levels of viremia that showed typical symptoms of PRRS, whereas others showed few clinical effects of the virus. Line differences and line by challenge interactions across days are evidence of genetic mechanisms involved in immune responses to PRRSV. The nature of these genetic differences or whether it is possible to select for greater resistance cannot be determined from the data collected so far. The next step in this research will be to investigate differences in expression of specific genes in the resistant/suscep-tible classes of pigs. The focus will be on genes expressed in macro-phage cells in the lung, but genes expressed in other tissues involved in immune responses (e.g., lymph and spleen) could also be important. Because of the difficulty in applying quantitative methods to select for PRSSV resistance, experiments to identify the genes involved are critical as it unlikely that genetic change can occur until selection directly for these genes in the absence of PRRSV can be applied. The Nebraska Index Line is reproductively superior to its contemporary control, producing approximately four pigs more per litter. However, the genes or quantitative trait loci (QTL) that cause these differences are unknown. A previous study with an F 2 resource population created by crossing the NE Index and Control lines identified one QTL affecting ovulation rate, one QTL affecting number of fully formed fetuses, one QTL affecting number of pigs born alive, two QTL affecting number of stillborn pigs, five QTL affecting nipple number, and six QTL affecting age at puberty. However, individual birth weight and weaning weight had not been included in the analyses. In addition, improved statistical models with greater power to identify QTL and test for additional kinds of gene action have been developed. The objective of this experiment was to apply these more powerful models to the data from the …

P-65: Maternal Effect Genes in Mammalian Reproduction

Background: Regulation of gene expression in mammalian embryos is not completely known. Pre-implantation embryos need maternal RNA and proteins synthesized during oogenesis, to regulate development before mater-embryo transition, as the grown oocyte and the 1-cell zygote are transcriptionally silent. There are some oocyte-specific genes called maternal effect genes which may account for this ea...

Expression profile of developmentally important genes in pre- and peri-implantation goat embryos produced in vitro

Background Little is understood about the regulation of gene expression during early goat embryo development. This study investigated the expression profile of 19 genes, known to be critical for early embryo development in mouse and human, at five different stages of goat in vitro embryo development (oocyte, 8-16 cell, morula, day-7 blastocyst, and day 14 blastocyst). MaterialsAndMethods Stage-...

P-175: Relationship between Dietary Fat Intake and Its Major Food Sources and Assisted Reproduction Parameters

Background: To examine the relative contributions of dietary fat intake level and its food sources and assisted reproduction parameters. Materials and Methods: A prospective study was conducted on 240 infertile women. In assisted reproduction treatment cycle, body mass index (BMI), physical activity (PA), calorie intake, fat consumption and major food sources were assessed. The number of retrie...

مروری بر رابطه HLA و بیماری های پریودنتال

This review was focused on investigations in the relationship between human leukocyte antigens and periodontal disease. Several studies have looked for relationship between HLA phenotypes and early onset periodontitis (EOP). There have also been reports on both positive and negative relationship between specific HLA antigens and periodontal disease. Positive relationship has been reported among...

Aspergillus nidulans conidiation genes dewA, fluG, and stuA are differentially regulated in early vegetative growth.

Microarray analysis was used to identify transcriptional changes in early vegetative growth of the filamentous fungus Aspergillus nidulans. The results suggest that the previously identified conidiation genes dewA, fluG, and stuA may function in isotropic expansion during early vegetative growth and asexual reproduction.

Identifying the most suitable species of Iranian medical leeches for commercialization its reproduction and breeding.

This study aimed to identify the most suitable species of Iranian medical leeches for aquaculture through a comparative study of growth, survival and reproduction of Hirudo medicinalis and Hirudo orientalis, which are native to the southern shores of the Caspian Sea and do not have sufficient information about their biology. Medicinalis growth was significantly faster (p<0.05) until the fifth m...
